DISM

DISM (Deployment Image Servicing and Management) is a command line tool used for a variety of tasks for both the management and servicing of Microsoft Windows and the WinPE preboot environment.

DISM has been included in Windows 7 and Server 2008 R2 operating systems and above.  It is also included in the Windows Automated Installation Kit (WAIK) version 2.0 and higher, as well as in the Windows Assessment and Deployment Kit (ADK).

There are 2 basic catagories for using DISM; Management or Servicing.

Management

DISM management tasks include:

  • Listing all the images within a .WIM file.
  • Listing information about an individual image.
  • Listing specific information about a mounted image.
    • Where it is mounted.
    • Index of the image or of each image.
    • Mount status.
  • Listing the driver information.
  • Lising all drivers within an image.
  • Listing the international settings and languages in an image.
  • Troubleshooting through integrated status and logging.
  • Lising all the features within a package file.

Servicing

DISM servicing tasks include:

  • Preparing a WinPE image.
  • Add boot-critical drivers to support hardware models.
  • Add operating system updates, patches, and hotfixes.
  • Add or remove a language pack and configure international settings.
  • Troubleshotting through integrated status and logging.
  • Apply settings to an unattend.xml configuration file.
